Free DCAT reviewer: mock questions

Questions from across the subtests, picked from core topics. Pick an answer to see whether you got it right, along with the full explanation. For the exam format, subtests and sources, see the DCAT coverage guide.

  1. Question 1
    Mathematics and Statistics

Which measure is most sensitive to extreme outliers?

Not quite. The answer is: Mean

    Topic: Stats Properties.
Explanation: The mean uses every value in the set, making a very large or small outlier heavily influence the average.
    Result: Mean.

  2. Question 2
    Mathematics and Statistics

    The vertex of the parabola y=x2−4x+3y = x^{2} - 4x + 3 is at:

Not quite. The answer is: (2,−1)(2, -1)

    Topic: Quadratic Equations.
Formula: The xx-coordinate of the vertex is x=−b2ax = \frac{-b}{2a}.
    Step 1: x=42=2x = \frac{4}{2} = 2.
    Step 2: y=(2)2−4(2)+3=4−8+3=−1y = (2)^{2} - 4(2) + 3 = 4 - 8 + 3 = -1.
    Result: Vertex is (2,−1)(2, -1).

  3. Question 3
    Mathematics and Statistics

Jack takes 40 minutes to carry a pail of water. Jill takes 25 minutes. Jack does the task 3 times, and Jill does it 2 times. What is the mean time taken per trip for these 5 combined trips?

Not quite. The answer is: 34 minutes

    Topic: Mean (Weighted).
    Step 1: Total time = (40×3)+(25×2)=120+50=170(40 \times 3) + (25 \times 2) = 120 + 50 = 170.
    Result: Mean=1705=34Mean = \frac{170}{5} = 34.

  4. Question 4
    Science

What are biotic factors in an ecosystem?

Not quite. The answer is: Living components such as plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria

    Topic: Ecology.
Explanation: Biotic factors are the living parts of an ecosystem; abiotic factors are the non-living conditions around them.

  5. Question 5
    Science

What is the kinetic energy of a 3 kg object moving at 7 m/s?

Not quite. The answer is: 73.5 J

    Topic: Energy (Kinetic).
    Formula: KE=12mv2KE = \frac{1}{2}mv^2.
    Result: KE=0.5×3×72=0.5×3×49=73.5 JKE = 0.5 \times 3 \times 7^2 = 0.5 \times 3 \times 49 = 73.5 \text{ J}.

  6. Question 6
    Mental Ability: Vocabulary and Analogy

    THIEF : STEAL :: LIAR : ?

Not quite. The answer is: deceive

This is a doer-to-characteristic-action analogy. A thief steals; a liar deceives.

  7. Question 7
    Reading Comprehension

Passage: “Preliminary findings tend to support the hypothesis that regular exercise improves mood, though the effect size was small.”

Which phrase in this sentence is an example of hedging?

Not quite. The answer is: “tend to support”

“Tend to support” qualifies the claim rather than asserting it as proven fact, which is exactly what hedging language does in academic writing.

  8. Question 8
    Mental Ability: Logic Puzzles

Five books are lined up on a shelf. The Math book is to the right of Science. English is to the left of Science, but right of History. Art is to the right of Math. Which book is exactly in the middle?

Not quite. The answer is: Science

Let's map them left to right. English is between History and Science: [History, English, Science]. Math is right of Science: [History, English, Science, Math]. Art is right of Math: [History, English, Science, Math, Art]. Science is right in the middle.

DCAT reviewer FAQ

What sections are on the DCAT?

The DCAT has five areas: Mental Ability, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Statistics, and Science. Mental Ability is broad and can include vocabulary, analogies, and logic puzzles.

Does the DCAT have trigonometry?

Reports from past test takers say the DCAT Math section is algebra-centered with no trigonometry. Expect factoring, inequalities, rational and quadratic equations, logarithms, business math, and similar triangles instead.

How much Statistics is on the DCAT?

A lot. The DCAT dedicates a sizeable portion of the exam to Statistics alone. Reported topics include z-scores, Pearson correlation, probability distributions such as Poisson, hypergeometric, and binomial, Type I and Type II errors, null and alternative hypotheses, and linear regression.

What is in the DCAT Reading Comprehension section?

It focuses on academic English (EAPP) and research. EAPP questions cover the formality of academic writing, hedging, citation, and rhetorical patterns, while research questions ask about the parts of a research paper.

Is the DCAT Science section hard?

Past takers describe it as lighter than the other sections. Reported topics include earthquakes, force, kinetic energy, autotrophs, biotic and abiotic factors, the rock cycle, and about two basic chemistry items.

How should I prepare for the DCAT?

Prioritize Statistics and Algebra, since they carry the most weight. Practice under time, because students often lose points on speed and concentration rather than knowledge, and keep an error log of the topic, why you missed it, and the correct concept.

Can I practice DCAT questions for free on prepPH?

Yes. The sample questions on this page are free to try without an account. prepPH also has a free plan, and a Premium plan that unlocks unlimited flashcards and weak-topic breakdowns.
