Questions from across the subtests, picked from core topics. Pick an answer to see whether you got it right, along with the full explanation. For the exam format, subtests and sources, see the USTET coverage guide.

  1. Question 1
    Science

In a chemical reaction, the mass of reactants equals the mass of products. This is the:

Not quite. The answer is: Law of conservation of mass

    Topic: Chemical Reactions.
Explanation: Atoms are only rearranged during reactions - never created or destroyed - so total mass stays the same on both sides of the equation.

  2. Question 2
    Science

A 2 kg object is held 5 m above the ground. What is its gravitational potential energy? (g = 9.8 m/s²)

Not quite. The answer is: 98 J

    Topic: Work Energy Power.
    Formula: PE=mghPE = mgh.
    Result: PE=2 kg×9.8 m/s2×5 m=98 JPE = 2\ \text{kg} \times 9.8\ \text{m/s}^2 \times 5\ \text{m} = 98\ \text{J}.

  3. Question 3
    Science

The two main types of body waves produced by earthquakes are:

Not quite. The answer is: P-waves and S-waves

    Topic: Earthquakes.
Explanation: Body waves travel through the interior - P (primary, compressional, fastest) and S (secondary, shear); L/R waves travel the surface.

  4. Question 4
    Mathematics

    If yy varies inversely as xx and y=6y = 6 when x=4x = 4, what is yy when x=3x = 3?

Not quite. The answer is: 8

    Topic: Direct and Inverse Variation.
    Formula: y=kxy = \frac{k}{x}.
    Step 1: Find kk: 6=k46 = \frac{k}{4}, so k=24k = 24.
    Step 2: y=243y = \frac{24}{3}.
    Result: y=8y = 8.

  5. Question 5
    Mathematics

A rectangular garden has an area of 108 m². Its length is 3 m longer than its width. What is its width?

Not quite. The answer is: 9 m

    Topic: Word Problems.
    Step 1: w(w+3)=108w(w + 3) = 108.
    Step 2: w2+3w−108=0w^2 + 3w - 108 = 0.
    Step 3: (w+12)(w−9)=0(w + 12)(w - 9) = 0.
    Result: w=9w = 9 meters.

  6. Question 6
    English: Grammar and Vocabulary

Identify the part of the sentence that contains an error.
    (A) By the time we arrived, (B) the movie already started (C) and we had (D) to wait outside.

Not quite. The answer is: B

Since the movie started before another past action (our arrival), the past perfect is required: 'had already started,' not 'already started.'

  7. Question 7
    English: Reading Comprehension

Passage: Sleep is not merely a passive state of rest, but an active period of neurological maintenance. During deep sleep, the brain clears out toxins accumulated during waking hours.

    What is the main idea?

Not quite. The answer is: Sleep is an active and essential process for brain health.

By contrasting 'passive rest' with 'active maintenance,' the author emphasizes that sleep is a functional, required time for brain upkeep.

  8. Question 8
    Mental Ability

If today is exactly three days after Wednesday, what day of the week will it be tomorrow?

Not quite. The answer is: Sunday

Three days after Wednesday is Saturday (Thursday=1, Friday=2, Saturday=3). If today is Saturday, then tomorrow is Sunday.

  9. Question 9
    Mental Ability: Abstract Reasoning

Select the correct mirror image for the figure, assuming the mirror is placed at the TOP.

USTET abstract reasoning figure for question 9
Not quite. The answer is: C

    Topic: Mirror Images.
Observation: The mirror is at the top, so the figure is flipped upside down while left and right stay in place. The small circle moves from the top-left corner to the bottom-left corner, and the rectangle ends up above it.
    Result: C.

  10. Question 10
    Mental Ability: Abstract Reasoning

Which of the options A, B, C, or D logically completes the domino sequence?

USTET abstract reasoning figure for question 10

USTET reviewer FAQ

How many items are on the USTET?

The USTET has 300 items across four subtests: Mental Ability (80), English (80), Mathematics (60), and Science (80).

What subjects are on the USTET?

The USTET covers Mental Ability, English, Mathematics, and Science. Mental Ability focuses on abstract reasoning and problem-solving, English covers spelling, reading comprehension, grammar, and verbal reasoning, and Science spans chemistry, biology, physics, and Earth Science.

Does USTET Science cover only senior high topics?

Not necessarily. The exam may draw on topics from across your high school science subjects, so go back to your earlier years too, not just senior high.

Is Mental Ability important on the USTET?

Yes. Mental Ability carries 80 items, as many as English or Science, so neglecting it leaves a large share of the exam to chance.

How should I budget my time on the USTET?

Budget your time by item count. Science, English, and Mental Ability have 80 items each, while Mathematics has 60, so each of the three larger subtests deserves roughly equal review time.
