Free UPCAT reviewer: mock questions

Questions from across the subtests, picked from core topics. Pick an answer to see whether you got it right, along with the full explanation. For the exam format, subtests and sources, see the UPCAT coverage guide.

  1. Question 1
    Mathematics

    What are the solutions of x2−5x+6=0x^{2} - 5x + 6 = 0?

    Not quite. The answer is: x=2x = 2 or x=3x = 3

    Topic: Quadratic Equations.
Formula: Factor and use the zero product property.
    Step 1: x2−5x+6=(x−2)(x−3)x^{2} - 5x + 6 = (x - 2)(x - 3).
    Step 2: (x−2)(x−3)=0(x - 2)(x - 3) = 0 gives x−2=0x - 2 = 0 or x−3=0x - 3 = 0.
    Result: x=2x = 2 or x=3x = 3.

  2. Question 2
    Mathematics

A mother is currently 4 times as old as her daughter. In 5 years, she will be 3 times as old as her daughter. How old is the daughter now?

Not quite. The answer is: 10

    Topic: Word Problems.
    Formula: M=4DM = 4D; M+5=3(D+5)M + 5 = 3(D + 5).
    Step 1: Substitute: 4D+5=3D+154D + 5 = 3D + 15.
    Step 2: D=10D = 10.
Result: The daughter is 10 years old.

  3. Question 3
    Science

In a cross between Aa × Aa, the fraction of offspring showing the recessive phenotype is:

Not quite. The answer is: 1/4

    Topic: Genetics and Heredity.
Explanation: The Punnett square gives 1 AAAA : 2 AaAa : 1 aaaa - only the single aaaa combination shows the recessive trait, so 1/4 (25%).

  4. Question 4
    Science

A 1000 kg car decelerates from 20 m/s to rest in 5 seconds. The braking force is:

Not quite. The answer is: 4000 N

    Topic: Newton's Laws.
    Formula: F=ma=1000×205F = ma = 1000 \times \dfrac{20}{5}.
    Result: F=4000 NF = 4000\ \mathrm{N}.

  5. Question 5
    Language Proficiency

The word 'abundant' most nearly means:

Not quite. The answer is: plentiful

'Abundant' comes from the Latin 'abundare' (to overflow), meaning existing or available in large quantities.

  6. Question 6
    Language Proficiency

Identify the part of the sentence that contains an error.
    (A) The number of applicants (B) have increased (C) since last year (D) due to the new policy.

Not quite. The answer is: B

'The number of' is treated as singular, so the verb should be 'has increased,' not 'have increased.'

  7. Question 7
    Reading Comprehension

Passage: Many modern cities are investing heavily in green spaces. Urban parks not only reduce the heat island effect but also improve the mental well-being of residents.

What is the main idea of the passage?

Not quite. The answer is: Green spaces provide both environmental and psychological benefits to cities.

The passage lists two distinct advantages of urban parks: reducing the heat island effect (environmental) and improving mental well-being (psychological).

  8. Question 8
    Reading Comprehension

Passage: The detective noticed that the umbrella in the hallway was bone dry, even though the suspect claimed he had just walked home in the torrential thunderstorm.

    What can be reasonably inferred?

Not quite. The answer is: The suspect is likely lying about his recent whereabouts.

If the suspect walked home in a storm, his umbrella would be wet. The physical evidence (bone dry umbrella) disproves the suspect's verbal claim.

UPCAT reviewer FAQ

What subjects are on the UPCAT?

The UPCAT has four subtests: Language Proficiency, Reading Comprehension, Science, and Mathematics. All questions are multiple choice. Filipino is not a separate subtest; it is built into Language Proficiency and Reading Comprehension.

How do I apply for the UPCAT?

You apply online through the UP Office of Admissions portal. For UPCAT 2027, applicants filled out Form 1 from March 3 to 30, 2026, and their school confirmed them through Form 2A. After the exam (August 1 to 2, 2026), applicants entered their Grade 8 to 11 grades through Form 2B and submitted a certified true copy of their SF-10 or Student Permanent Record to the UP Office of Admissions. Dates change each cycle, so check the official UPCAT site for the latest schedule.

Can I use a calculator on the UPCAT?

No. Calculators are not allowed, but scratch paper is provided. That makes hand arithmetic worth practicing: fractions, percentages, and long division all come up and cost time if you are slow at them.

How long is the UPCAT?

The UPCAT is a five-hour exam session covering all four subtests. Because it is long, practicing under timed conditions helps you build the stamina to stay accurate toward the end.

How does UP decide who gets admitted?

Admission is based on your University Predicted Grade (UPG), which generally combines your high school grades (40%) and your UPCAT score (60%). A strong exam score can lift your UPG, but your grades still count for a large share.

Is the UPCAT Math section mostly Algebra?

Yes, Algebra takes up most of the Math subtest, covering equations, inequalities, factoring, quadratics, functions, and word problems. Arithmetic, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability also appear, so do not skip them.

What is the best way to start reviewing for the UPCAT?

Start with the basics and practice them by hand, since there is no calculator. Then work through each subtest with questions that explain the answer, so you learn the reasoning instead of memorizing. Reading widely also builds the speed you need for the long passages.

Can I practice UPCAT questions for free on prepPH?

Yes. The sample questions on this page are free to try without an account. prepPH also has a free plan, and a Premium plan that unlocks unlimited flashcards and weak-topic breakdowns.
